Shoreham-Wading River High School head coach Aden Smith is the subject of an investigation by the school district, Superintendent Gerard Poole announced.
“The district is currently investigating an incident involving the varsity football team’s head coach,” the superintendent said in a statement. “The incident took place during a scrimmage against Islip on (Friday, Aug. 30.) While this investigation is underway, the head coach has been removed and the current assistant coaches will be leading the team.”
Details of the incident were not immediately released by the district. According to reports, the incident may have involved a small fight between players on both sides of the field. This was Smith’s second year at the helm of the varsity team.
Shoreham-Wading River is scheduled to open its season on Friday, Sept. 6 at home against Bayport-Blue Point. The team is coming off a division victory a year ago.
